As Dallas County continues to rapidly grow, crime continues to grow as well. Meggan has extensive trial experience, including homicides, sex assaults, robberies, and many other types of crimes. When crime happens in Dallas County, the citizens deserve to have an experienced prosecutor at the helm, ensuring justice and safety for the community.
Meggan’s efforts as a prosecutor are recognized by local and State leaders. She recently worked with law enforcement to identify deficiencies in the Iowa Code to protect children from sexual predators, leading to unanimous passage of legislation to expand proactive policing abilities. She also currently serves on two different interim studies in the Iowa legislature, advocating for human trafficking changes and ensuring that Iowa law enforcement receive the necessary training to be the best in the nation. Meggan attends national conferences on relevant topics to stay apprised of the latest prosecution practices for her own cases. She also frequently speaks to local organizations, and has regularly presented at the Iowa County Attorney Association conferences, providing training and best practices to county attorneys across the state. Meggan will continue to provide that dedication to excellence and advocacy in all areas of her practice as County Attorney.
With a business background, including an MBA, Meggan has the skills to ensure that the office of the Dallas County Attorney is being effectively and efficiently run. She understands that as a steward of tax dollars, it is the responsibility of the County Attorney to efficiently use the budget to meet the demands of the expanding office, and use the experience she has gained in the largest prosecution office in Iowa to streamline and manage the growth that is yet to come, from additional staff and internalization of resources and processes, to the expansion of use of technology in prosecution.
With 14 years in prosecution, including four years handling mental health and substance abuse committals, and another 3 years in a drug prosecution unit, Meggan knows that drug addiction and mental health needs often go hand-in-hand. She will work with the court system, law enforcement, and local resources to build a mental health/drug court, in which non-violent offenders can receive the resources they need to become safe, productive members of Dallas County again.
Meggan will ensure that law enforcement continues to stay apprised of the most up-to-date changes in criminal law, and will utilize her experience working with proactive law enforcement task forces on areas such as sexual exploitation of minors and human trafficking to encourage those efforts to continue in Dallas County. Working directly with all law enforcement officers in Dallas County, Meggan will safeguard the rights of the community, and always strive for justice.
